Over the years, I’ve worked alongside many talented and professional Spanish interpreters, and the overall quality of interpretation in Oregon’s courts has improved greatly since I began practicing law more than 30 years ago. Certified interpreters today play an essential role in ensuring access to justice for non-English speakers.
Still, there have been issues over the years, like when an interpreter had summarized a client’s words rather than translating them literally. Even small changes in phrasing can alter the meaning of testimony in ways that matter. Because I speak Spanish fluently, I’ve been able to recognize and correct those errors immediately. In one instance, we even had to stop a deposition and reschedule it with a different interpreter to make sure my client’s statements were accurately represented.
